There is a need in the amateur community for a robust mobile multimode hotspot. I have an OpenSpot 3, and the only reason I still use it is because there is no external antenna and its small form factor. It is otherwise a terrible and wholly unreliable device with zero customer service or support. My 4 year old Pi-Star has never missed a beat and has been powered up for at least two+ years continuously (only down because I had to change an old UPS).
I would love to see the hardware development of a miniature form factor hotspot with no external antenna and designed exclusively for rough-and-tumble mobile applications. I drive a Jeep and the first off-road trail I’d hit with an externally-mounted antenna and it would be trashed in minutes.
Furthermore, on the same idea, any vehicles manufactured by Stellantis (Chryster, Dodge, Jeep, Ram) have a built-in 4G or 5G hotspot, but only at 5.8 GHz, and not 2.4. I believe both Ford and GM are also 5.8 Gig only but I cannot confirm. An ideal project would be a device that can be hooked up to a vehicle’s 12V supply, tucked up behind the dash or deep in the center console, switched on, and forgotten about. After configuration, the device should just…work. Any chance your team might be interested in pursuing a device like this? I honestly hate the face that the OpenSpot is my only option, and even there, I need to run a 2.4 Gig hotspot on my cellphone.
Thanks in advance.
